Are You Building Health, or Simply Looking for Disease?

If someone asked you what does preventive health care mean to you, how would you answer?

For many people, the first things that come to mind are annual check-ups, blood work, or medical screenings. These tools can provide valuable information about your health by helping identify concerns, monitor changes, and guiding appropriate care.

After nearly three decades of working with clients, I've come to believe there is an even more important question we should be asking.
‍
‍Are you building health every day, or are you simply looking for disease?

‍Those are not the same thing.

Preventive Care vs. Preventative Screening: Understanding the Difference

The terms preventive care and preventative screening are often used interchangeably, but they represent two very different approaches.

Preventative screening is designed to gather information about your health at a specific moment in time. Blood work, urinalysis, and diagnostic imaging are examples of tools healthcare professionals may use to investigate symptoms, monitor certain conditions, or identify changes that may require further attention.

These tests have value.

However, they don't create health on their own.

They tell us where you are today.

Preventive care asks a broader question:
‍
‍What are you doing every day to support the health of your body before problems become obvious?

This is where lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, stress management, movement, and individualized natural health care become important pieces of your wellness picture.

Health Is More Than the Absence of Disease

For many years, health has often been measured by what isn't there, a disease, a diagnosis, or an abnormal test result.
‍
While those things are certainly important, they don't always tell the whole story.

Over the years, I have met many people who were told their tests were “normal,” yet they knew something still wasn’t quite right. They may have felt exhausted, experienced digestive discomfort, struggled with sleep, noticed changes in their energy, or simply felt that their body was trying to communicate something.

True wellness is about much more than avoiding illness.

It's about resilience.

It's about supporting your body so it can function at its best.

It is about having the energy to enjoy your life, recover from daily stressors, and feel more connected to your own well-being.

Building Health Is an Everyday Process

Health is rarely shaped by one single event. More often, it is influenced by hundreds of small choices repeated over time.

The foods we choose.

The quality of our sleep.

How we manage stress.

How we move our bodies.

The nutrients we provide.

The time we allow ourselves to rest and recover.

Individually, these choices may seem small. Collectively, they can have a meaningful impact on how we feel, how we function, and how resilient our bodies become.

Rather than waiting until something feels wrong, I believe there is tremendous value in understanding what your body may need to function optimally and then making thoughtful, individualized choices to support it.

Because there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health.

Every person is unique.

No Two Bodies Are Alike

One of the reasons I have dedicated my career to natural health care is because I believe people deserve an approach that recognizes their individuality.

Instead of asking,

"What does everyone take for this?"

I prefer asking,

"What does your body need?"

That question changes the conversation.

It moves us away from generic recommendations and toward a more personalized understanding of nutrition, lifestyle, stress, digestive health, and herbal support.

It shifts the focus from simply responding to problems toward actively supporting long-term wellness.

You Are the Most Important Member of Your Healthcare Team

Your healthcare decisions belong to you.

Conventional medicine offers valuable diagnostic tools and treatments. Natural health care offers another perspective—one that focuses on supporting your body's everyday function and helping you make informed choices that align with your personal wellness goals.

I don't believe health is something that happens only during an appointment or after a test result arrives.

Health is built through the choices we make every single day.

Because the greatest investment you will ever make isn't in looking for disease.

It is in intentionally building a healthier, more resilient you.

So, I'll leave you with one final question:

Are you building health… or are you simply looking for disease?
